About Us

USCRI’s Community Outreach and Education team focuses on improving outcomes and removing barriers for unaccompanied children through networking, advocacy, trainings, technical assistance, and partnership-building on a regional level. The team coordinates participation in various coalitions and conducts community presentations to raise awareness of the unaccompanied children population and their unique needs.

Below is a list of topics currently offered by our Community Outreach and Education team. Our trainings and workshops can be tailored to meet the needs of your team and organization.

AVAILABLE TRAINING TOPICS FOR PROVIDERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

This training provides an overview of who UCs are and the root causes of their migration, as well as of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) reunification process, including custody, reunification, and post-release services. It also includes best practices for service providers interacting with UCs.

This training provides an overview of who UCs are and what their educational rights under federal law in the United States are, as well as suggestions for school administrators for how to comply with federal education law when working with UCs who may have incomplete enrollment documents. It can be tailored to include state-specific information.

This training builds upon our UC Educational Rights training and is a good fit for teachers, parent/family or McKinney Vento liaisons, school social workers, and guidance counselors. It includes practical information about how to support the specific needs of UC students in a classroom or school setting.

This training provides a condensed overview of UCs and the ORR process and then moves into content designed to build an understanding of how to identify, assess for, respond to, and report sex and labor trafficking situations involving Unaccompanied Children. This training is not law-enforcement specific and can be tailored to any audience who is in contact with UCs.

This is a targeted training for child welfare agencies that goes through a brief overview of Unaccompanied Children before examining best practices for assessing and responding to abuse, neglect, and trafficking situations involving UCs.

This training explores some of the migration-related stress and trauma that Unaccompanied Children may experience and provides some suggestions for best practices for working with UCs from a migration-trauma informed lens. This training is not specific to mental health professionals and is appropriate for any service providers interacting with UCs.

This training provides an in-depth overview of the ORR-funded Home-Study and Post Release Services programs, including an explanation of the purpose, goals, and services provided under PRS.

This training examines the root causes of UC migration from each top UC-sending countries and provides an overview of what migration journeys may look like depending on the child’s country of origin. It also includes country-specific cultural considerations for working with immigrant youth. This training is currently available for Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and El Salvador.
